Bulgaria's Education Minister Todor Tanev

Minister Todor Tanev has pledged a new Education Act instead of patchy amendments and insertions to the existing one.

In a Sunday interview for the Bulgarian National Television, he claimed that the main problem of universities was the creation of unemployment.

Bulgaria’s Education Minister, as cited by dnevnik.bg, insisted that universities were not supposed to be closed by administrative means.

“The question that needs to be asked concerns the quality of training universities offer and whether they should receive equal subsidies. We need to adopt a college system in the future, which is a superstructure to secondary education,” he stated.

Tanev argued that the main problem which primary and secondary education in Bulgaria were facing was the lack of motivation among students and teachers.

The Education Minister spoke in favor of radical changes to the curriculum involving the introduction of cutting-edge technology in the sphere.

He said that students nowadays needed a dialogic approach as information was just several mouse clicks away and they were looking for concise and clear answers to their questions.

Tanev also underscored the need for “a radical upward revision” of teacher salaries, adding that the education system provided ample opportunity for securing financial resources for the purpose.
