Stefan Vodenicharov, President of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS), has said that the institution expects to receive EUR 237 M for research over the next 5 years.

Vodenicharov, as cited by the Bulgarian National Radio, noted Tuesday that the money was expected to be granted under the EU operational program Science and Education for Smart Growth 2014-2020.

“Bulgaria was the only country which had failed to earmark funding for science under the EU accession funds and this program comes as the result of substantial suffering. However, I hope that in one month’s time, after the documentation is examined in Brussels, we will have a sum of around EUR 237 M for research and technological development,” he declared.

“Without good education and serious research we cannot have innovations and Bulgaria cannot emerge from the current state of financial crisis without innovative technology,” the President of BAS added.
