Interconnectors 'Could Cover Bulgaria's Gas Needs,' BEH Says

Bulgaria's interconnections with neighboring countries could entirely meet the need of natural gas if the regular flow is disrupted, according to the Bulgarian Energy Holding (BEH).

The state-owned holding's CEO Jacquelin Cohen, who took over the structure in July, told lawmakers on Thursday that gas consumption was steadily declining in Bulgaria and would amount to less than 3 billion cubic meters in 2014, Investor.bg reports him as saying.

Apart from being "sufficient", the capacity of interconnections could also enable Bulgaria to export to other countries, for instance in Serbia's western regions, Cohen argued.

Commenting on the idea for a Vertical Gas Corridor connecting Bulgaria, Romania and Greece he said a pre-project study had not yet been launched.

BEH had a 50-percent stake in South Stream Bulgaria, the company set up to operate the section of South Stream which was designed to pass via Bulgaria before Russia dropped the project last week.
