Poland and Finland reported “unprecedented” Russian naval and air force activities in the Baltic Sea region this week.
Poland's Defence Minister Tomasz Siemoniak, quoted by the BBC, said most of the activity was in international waters and airspace and Sweden was the country most affected.
According to AP, Siemoniak also said Poland does not see Russia's show of military strength as a preparation for war. Instead, he called it a Russian attempt to test NATO, adding "but it doesn't help to build good relations and trust."
On Wednesday, the Helsinki Times reported that the Finnish Air Force has detected “unusually intense Russian activity” over the Gulf of Finland and the Baltic Sea in general during a Russian military excercise.
The activity was first detected on 6 December and has continued between Sunday and Tuesday. It remains unknown when the exercise is scheduled to end.
Finland's Minister of Defence, Carl Haglund, commented that the activity was clearly a show of force by Russia. “It presents no immediate threat, but Russia with its actions is demonstrating that it has the power and capacity to act, if it chooses to,” Haglund said.
The activity has prompted the Finnish Air Force to step up its air-policing operations.
