Bulgaria is again among the countries with worst health indicators in the EU, revealed a recent report of the European Commission.

The third edition of the “Health at a Glance” report is the result of the fruitful cooperation between the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the European Commission.

The research covers all 28 member states of the EU, four candidate countries and three European Free Trade Association (EFTA) countries.

The results show that Bulgarians are among the Europeans with shortest life expectancy and highest mortality rates.

The life expectancy in Bulgaria in 2012 was 74.4 years, with only Latvia and Lithuania doing worse in the EU.

All neighbouring non-EU countries included in the study – Serbia, Macedonia and Turkey have a longer life expectancy than Bulgaria.

Although life expectancy in Bulgaria has increased from 1990, it still remains well below the EU average of 79.2 years.

People from sunny Spain and Italy enjoy the longest life expectancy in the EU.

Although it had decreased somewhat from 2000, Bulgaria had the highest mortality rate in the EU in 2011.

While Bulgaria had lower than the EU average cancer mortality rate, it had the highest number of deaths occurring from stroke in 2011.

In 2012 Bulgaria had the second highest infant mortality rate in the EU, preceded only by Romania.

While Bulgaria had near to average alcohol consumption rate in 2012, it had the third highest smoking rate in the EU, preceded only by Greece and Croatia.

Bulgarians had the second lowest fruit consumption rate in the EU in 2012, preceded only by Finland.

In 2011 Bulgarians were the most exposed to air pollution by particulate matter in the EU, which represents a marked increase from the 2001 figure.

Bulgaria had the lowest health expenditure per capita in 2012, second only to Romania.

In 2011 Bulgaria had around the EU average transport accident mortality rate and below the average suicide mortality rate.

In 2012 the number of HIV and AIDS incidences in Bulgaria was below the EU average.
