The buying-in price of tobacco in 2014 will be 10% lower than last year’s, according to Tsvetan Filev, Chair of the National Tobacco Growers Association (NAT – 2010).

He claimed that the protests of tobacco growers would continue until the law on tobacco was changed.

“There are no rules at the moment. Everybody is selling and buying tobacco wherever they wish, which is particularly ill-advised as tobacco is a special kind of raw material which is used for the production of tobacco products which fetch around BGN 2 B into the state coffers each year,” Filev stated in a Thursday interview for the Bulgarian National Radio.

He claimed that one of the most serious problems in the sector was the lack of contracts between tobacco growers and traders, adding that this practice allowed companies to avoid legal responsibility.
