Serbia to Study Alternative Gas Supply Options After Russia Drops South Stream

Russia’s decision to abandon the South Stream pipeline project is a problem for Serbia which is forcing Belgrade is going to study alternative options to ensure its gas supplies,  Serbian Deputy PM Zorana Mihajlovic said on Tuesday.

Mihajlovic pointed to the Nis-Dimitrovgrad interconnection, which should make it possible to connect via Bulgaria to the future gas pipeline, which Russia plans to build to Turkey, and the gas terminal in the Greek port of Alexandroupolis.

"Serbia has neither done anything bad or wrong, nor caused such a decision to be made by Russian officials - to stop the construction of South Stream,” Tanjug quoted Mihajlovic as saying at a Serbian government meeting.

“On the contrary, we’ve done everything we had been asked to do to have it built, because for us, it is a matter of energy security".

Having in mind the European Commission's decision to continue South Stream talks with the countries participating in the project on December 9, Mijhalovic said she hoped the announcement that Russia is dropping the pipeline due to objections posed by the Commission didn’t mean a real end to the project.
