Warships from Russia's Northern Fleet entered the English Channel to hold drills, reports RIA Novosti, quoting the Russian Navy press office.

According to the report, a squadron of battleships, led by the Severomorsk anti-submarine ship crossed the narrowest part of the Channel and entered the Seine Bay.

“Due to bad weather, was decided that the ships remain in the neutral waters of the Seine Bay and hold exercises,” the Northern Fleet statement said. “While it is anchored the crew are undertaking a series of exercises on how to tackle ... infiltrating submarine forces and are training on survival techniques in the case of flooding or fire."

According to Reuters, France's navy confirmed the location of the ships and said it was not unusual to have Russian warships in the Channel.

"They are not holding exercises. They’re just waiting in a zone where they can be several times a year," said the French Navy's information service.
