Bulgaria will get 6% of the requested EUR 300 M under the European Union Solidarity Fund (EUSF), or some EUR 10.5 M, according to Regional Development Minister Lilyana Pavlova.

Pavlova gave a joint press conference with Sports Minister Krasen Kralev and Varna Mayor Ivan Portnih in Varna on Thursday.

She noted that the EUSF funding was to assist all municipalities which had suffered flood damage in 2014.

She made clear that the top priority would be the creation of a special unit at the Regional Development Ministry by December 20, adding that it had to be approved by the European Parliament after that.

Pavlova informed that while Bulgaria was waiting for the new unit to be green-lighted by the EP, the Regional Development Ministry would work with municipalities to set priorities and specify the details of the projects.

She pointed out that one of the projects for Varna included drainage channels at the Asparuhovo residential district, where the floods claimed the lives of 11 in June.

Bulgaria’s Regional Development Minister also said that the country could receive BGN 32 B by 2020 under the new operational programs in the 2014-2020 programming period.
