Bulgaria is highly likely to lose EU funds of EUR 100 million in the sphere of healthcare as the deadline for wrapping up public procurement procedures by December 10 is too short, according to Health Minister Petar Moskov.

According to reports of Bulgarian private TV station Nova TV, the resources could have been used for the treatment of patients diagnosed with cancer, who will be unable to receive radiation therapy with the da Vinci robotic surgery system, the CyberKnife, or the Gamma Knife, due to the poor performance of the administration.

Miroslav Nenkov, Health Minister in the caretaker government of Prime Minister Georgi Bliznashki, informed that his team had discovered the availability of EUR 100 M in their last days in office.

He commented that the sum of EUR 100 M could not be spent on anything else.

Nenkov rejected claims that Bulgaria did not need such pieces of equipment as there were no specialists who were sufficiently qualified to operate them.

According to Moskov and Nenkov, Bulgaria sends some 200 cancer patients a year to Turkey to receive treatment with such equipment, with each of them costing EUR 8 000 to the state budget.

Health Minister Moskov has vowed that the equipment will still be purchased under a different program, citing 2015 as a time frame.
