Michael Kirst, Westinghouse deputy president for strategy, is in Bulgaria in relation to the company's intention to build Unit 7 at the Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant, officials say.

Kirst will not meet representatives of the new government as the aim of his visit is to explore environmental requirements and licensing regimes.

Kirst explained that he is in the country to discuss with "colleagues how to go on with the process of introducing the project to the new government in Bulgaria."

"The purpose of my visit is not to inform the cabinet, but to understand how we are supposed to communicate with it," the Vice-President is quoted by daily Standart as saying.

At Westinghouse he is in charge of strategy and relations of the US-based company in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

Bulgaria's former elected government signed in August a shareholders' agreement with the US-based company to expand nuclear capabilities at the Kozloduy NPP.
