Polish Independence Day March Ends in Riots

Police in Warsaw has detained at least 280 people after a rally marking Poland's Independence Day.

As many as 47 people have been injured, German weekly Der Spiegel reports.

Clashes began between participants and the police on Tuesday evening as some of the demonstrators in the crow, reportedly nationalists, started hurling stones and firecrackers at security officers.

The standoff continued for about two hours.

The rally numbered between ten and twenty thousand people, but a group of nationalists wearing mask split from the main crowd.

Police officers are still chasing some of the hooligans, the police spokesperson Mariusz Sokolovski was quoted by Bulgaria's private national channel bTV as saying.

The route of Tuesday's demonstration was planned to prevent incidents similar to the one last year, when nationalists attacked the security box and set it ablaze.

Poland celebrates November 11 as the day when it became again independent after WWI.

The demo was organized by two far-right groups, Mlodziez Wszechpolska (All-Polish Youth) and the Oboz Narodowo-Radykalny (National Radical Camp).
