The life of a 48-year-old is in danger after the second self-immolation in Bulgaria within slightly over 24 hours, officials say.

Authorities reveal that according to a witness account the man was by the church at Sandanski's cemetery when he doused himself with "a liquid" and set himself on fire, public broadcaster BNR reports.

According to medical officials about 25 percent of the man's body surface area was affected by burns.

The man's motives are not yet clear.

Sandanski is a town in Bulgaria's south-west.

Tuesday's incident follows the self-immolation of a 38-year-old woman meters away from the Presidency building in downtown Sofia earlier this week. Her relatives say she was recently finding it difficult to make ends meet and look after her child.

Her condition is now reportedly critical, with doctors struggling to keep her alive but at the same time warning cases with such a percentage of burns (90) over the body tend to result in the person's death.

Last year, at least six similar incidents happened just within a few months amid mass protests against the government.
