Romania should set as its target reaching the "Bulgarian" level of tax collection, Mele?canu

Teodor Mele?canu, an independent candidate running to become Romania's President, said Monday his country should aspire to achieve the tax collection rate of Bulgaria.

Mele?canu argued state revenues would be up EUR 10 B if this goal is fulfilled, the national Bulgarian News Agency reports citing its Romanian counterpart agency AGERPRES.

"If we look at Romania, where tax collection rate is about 32 percent, compared to over 80 percent in Switzerland or Germany, we will promptly realize the basic setback of the Romanian state. In Bulgaria tax collection rate is at 42 percent. Ten percent more than in Romania," the candidate is quoted as saying.

Presidential elections are to be held November 2, and the run-off is scheduled for November 16.
