One in four Bulgarians starves or lives below the poverty threshold, while some 90 million tonnes of food are thrown away every year in the EU, Tsanka Milanova, CEO of the Bulgarian Food Bank said.

"Our job is not campaigning, and hunger is not something that happens from time to time. In 2013 the Bulgarian Food Bank collected over 260 tonnes of food, which was distributed among more than 15,000 starving children, old people and low income families,” Milanova said.

“This year we provided aid for the flood victims in Varna, Dobrich and Mizia and we continue to take care of those in need,” she told Darik news.

On the occasion of the World Food Day on October 16, the Bulgarian Food Bank will promote its cause with a series of initiatives and information campaigns all week.
