Ruse to Host Bulgaria’s 1st Municipally-owned Airport

Ruse will become the first Bulgarian city with a municipally-owned airport.

After three unsuccessful attempts to find a concessionaire, Bulgaria’s Transport Ministry adopted a decision to transfer the airport to the Ruse Municipality.

The proposal was approved by the Ruse Municipal Council in a unanimous vote on Thursday.

Bulgaria’s government is to vote on the proposal during one of its upcoming meetings.

The airport in the village of Shtraklevo was last used in the 90s.

It was used for civil flights for a long time, hosting flights to and from Sofia.

After the civil flights stopped, it was used by the army until 1999.

When army training flights were suspended, the airport was taken off the list of airports needed by the army, according to reports of the BGNES news agency.

The runway was built in 1967 and was extended in the 80s.

The runway is currently 2500m-long and it is in good condition, despite the fact that it has not been used for years.
