Switzerland will give Bulgaria a total of CHF 76 M (EUR 63 M) to work toward the reduction of economic and social inequality.

The Swiss grants were confirmed late on Monday, the first day of President Rosen Plevneliev's visit to the country, the news website blick.ch reports, citing the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (EDA).

Projects on sustainable development, environmental protection, security and research will be eligible to receive funding.

Plevneliev and his counterpart for 2014 Didier Burkhalter discussed Switzerland's policies on EU affairs and its bilateral projects with Bulgaria.

Earlier it was also officially confirmed that about EUR 2.9 M will be given to projects aimed at introducing elements of the dual education system (namely vocational training) in Bulgaria.

Swiss Justice Minister Simonetta Sommaruga, who took part in the meeting, also said that Bern and Sofia would also start collaboration in the police sector in the future and will work closely together against human trafficking.
