There are active cells of the Islamic State in Bulgaria, Arabist Kiryak Tsonev told Bulgaria's National Television, Monday.

"The threat posed by the Islamic State is great, because the group covers a large area of Central Asia through North Africa, and the Balkans up to Spain," the diplomat added.

According to Tsonev, the forceful assimilation of Bulgaria's Turkish minority by changing their Turkish names to Bulgarian in the period 1985—1989 has pushed some Bulgarian Muslims to Islamism.

The expert claims that there are people fighting for the Islamic State, who have been treated in Bulgarian hospitals. Some of them were in the country before engaging in combat, and have later returned to Bulgaria.

According to Tsonev, a new stage has begun, as the Islamic State forces are trying to push the Kurds into Turkish territory. Battles are becoming more violent and those people who have nowhere to go will come to Bulgaria, he explained.
