Austrian daily newspaper Der Kurier has published an article devoted to the return to power of former Prime Minister Boyko Borisov after the early elections in Bulgaria.

The publication is titled “Election Winner Borisov – the Brutal Buddha” and its subheading runs as follows: “Ex Prime Minister Borissov , known for its failures, celebrates his comeback.”.

“It was a unique event: 45 Bulgarian artists participating in an exhibition in Vienna’s K?nstlerhaus. Despite the fact that Vienna had never witnessed such a large amount of modern art works from the small Balkan country, someone else stole the show at that time, in 2006,  namely the former and probably incoming Prime Minister of Bulgaria and leader of the right-wing populist party GERB,” the article says.

“First Act: Borisov, then Mayor of Bulgaria's capital Sofia, is giving an opening speech. Art is a side issue. He focuses on the export of Bulgarian crime, his specialty area from the time as Chief Secretary of the Interior Ministry. His speech includes such a large number of references to the Roma which are not politically correct that his interpreter turns read in an effort to find milder formulations,” the publication states.

“Second Act: Gala Dinner at the Opernring. The appetizer is being served: beetroot soup and candied cherry tomatoes. A chair is pushed back noisily at the table of the guests of honor. Borisov stands up and announces that he is really hungry and he would like to look for grilled chicken,” Der Kurier states.

“Round-headed, bald, almost lacking a neck, with a beefy body and sometimes uncouth appearance - these are the trademarks of Borisov. But it’s all relative. With this style, he managed to win 33% of the votes for his party GERB (Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria) at the early elections on Sunday,” the Vienna-based daily informs.

“Born in 1959 in the village of Bankia near Sofia, the karate master still lives there. Judging by recordings of wiretaps which were leaked a few years ago, his mother spreads margarine on slices of bread for him in the morning.

The ex-bodyguard of Bulgaria's communist dictator Zhivkov and former king Simeon Saxe Coburg Gotha is also known by the codename Buddha. According to news portal, he was enlisted under this codename with the anti-mafia unit due to his alleged ties to organized crime,” the article says.
