Bulgaria’s Industrial Production Index Down 0.9% M/M in August 2014

According to preliminary data of Bulgaria’s National Statistical Institute (NSI), the Industrial Production Index, seasonally adjusted, decreased by 0.9% on the month in August 2014.

In August 2014, the working day adjusted Industrial Production Index fell by 1.9% year-on-year.

In August 2014, as compared to July 2014, the seasonally adjusted Industrial Production Index decreased in the segments of electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply by 2.9% and in the sphere of manufacturing by 0.7%, while in the mining and quarrying industry an increase by 2.8% was observed.

The most significant decreases in production in manufacturing were registered in the segments of other transport equipment by 35.4%, printing and reproduction of recorded media by 13.1%, basic pharmaceutical products and pharmaceutical preparations by 12.4%, fabricated metal products, except machinery and equipment by 9.5%, and tobacco products by 7.3%.

There was an increase in the production of chemicals and chemical products by 9.6%, while the production of furniture went up by 6.3% and the production of wearing apparel added 4.5%.

On annual basis, the Industrial Production Index, calculated on the basis of working day adjusted data, decreased in the segments of electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply by 15.2% and in the mining and quarrying industry by 5.3%, while in the sphere of manufacturing, an increase by 3.0% was observed.

In the sphere of manufacturing, the more significant year-on-year increases were registered in the production of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers by 30.6%, in the repair and installation of machinery and equipment by 26.2%, in the production of computer, electronic and optical products by 23.3%, in the production of chemicals and chemical products by 13.3%, and in the production of rubber and plastic products by 11.3%.

Decreases were registered in the production of other transport equipment by 20.8%, in the production of basic pharmaceutical products and pharmaceutical preparations by 17.0%, in the production of tobacco products by 9.9%, and in the production of electrical equipment by 6.6%.
