Bulgaria’s Next Parliament to Consist of 7-8 Parties - Poll

Bulgaria’s next Parliament is likely to consist of 7-8 parties or coalitions, according to a poll of the Institute of Modern Politics (IMP).

According to the poll, center-right party Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria (GERB) is to get 35% of the votes, while the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) is to receive 21.2% of the votes.

According to the NGO, there has been a big gap between the two major political parties, GERB and BSP, since end-July.

The IMP points out that the gap between the two major opponents, GERB and BSP, still amounts to over 10% of the votes.

The IMP claims that support for center-right party GERB may climb to 36-39% on the Election Day, October 5.

According to the poll, conducted on September 22-27, liberal party Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS) is to receive 12.7% of the votes.

The IMP predicts strong performance and serious competition among the middle-sized parties and coalitions, including populist party Bulgaria without Censorship, right-wing formation The Reformist Bloc, the Alternative for Bulgarian Revival (ABV Movement), nationalist party Ataka, and nationalist coalition The Patriotic Front, all of which are expected to get around 4% of the votes, the minimum threshold to enter Parliament.

If the plans of Bulgarian voters remain unchanged by October 5, Bulgaria’s next Parliament will consist of 7-8 parties and coalitions, according to the IMP.

One or two of the total of 7 or 8 parties expected to get into Parliament may eventually fail to mobilize their supporters and score below the 4% election threshold.

According to the poll, the Bulgaria without Censorship party gets 5.8% of the votes, The Reformist Bloc 5.6%, the ABV Movement 5.4%, and nationalist entities Ataka and The Patriotic Front both score around 5%
