Sofia Mayor Yordanka Fandakova will be awarded an Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany by German ambassador to Bulgaria Detlef Lingemann.

Fandakova will be awarded for her longtime contribution to the development of the Bulgarian-German relations.

As a deputy mayor and mayor of Sofia Municipality she has contributed significantly to the German-Bulgarian cultural cooperation and holds an open dialogue with the German business on issues important for the capital city's future, the German Embassy notes.

The German Order of Merit was instituted in 1951 by Federal President Theodor Heuss. It is the only honor that may be awarded in all fields of endeavor and is the highest tribute the Federal Republic of Germany can pay to individuals for services to the nation.

The Order of Merit may be awarded to Germans as well as foreigners for achievements in the political, economic, social or intellectual realm and for all kinds of outstanding services to the nation in the field of social, charitable or philanthropic work.
