Russia to Cut Gas Supplies to Poland

Energy | September 11, 2014, Thursday // 10:10|  views

Russian energy concern Gazprom is to slash gas deliveries to Poland by 24 percent, Polish state company PGNiG has announced.

Gazprom has not yet commented on the information, but experts suggest the step comes in retaliation to the prospect of new EU measures against Moscow.

Supplies dropped by 20% on Monday, according to PGNiG officials.

Poland is not strongly dependent on Russian gas, since it counts on domestically-produced coal for the bulk of its energy and is seeking to develop the shale gas industry.

However, some two-thirds of its gas imports (about 16 billion cubic meters annually) come from Russia.
