Bulgaria is Fifth Poorest Country in Europe – Serbian Statistics

Bulgaria is the fifth poorest country in Europe, according to a study of the Serbian Statistical Institute.

A total of 1.8 million people in Serbia live in poverty. The country ranks first among European countries with 24.6 percent of its population below the poverty line.

Greece comes second with 23.1% of its population living in extreme poverty. The third place is taken by Romania with 22.6%, Spain is fourth with 22.2%, and Bulgaria is fifth with 21.2% of its population at the poverty threshold.

The poverty line in 2012 was just over EUR 115 per household in Serbia. For a family of three, this amount was EUR 241, according to the statistics. In July, social benefits amounting to RSD 1.1B were given to 267,000 people. The basic salary in the country is RSD 7,700.
