The European Union is to introduce a new round of sanctions against Russia.

Her comments come after European sources told Interfax agency the bloc was determined to go with the measures against Russia.

Sanctions will be in force from Tursday depend on the situation in Ukraine and will therefore be "reversible", the BBC quotes the official as saying.

The nature and scope of the measures has not been announced, but leaders are to do so "within a short time".

The Wall Street Journal earlier reported three key entities - Gazprom Neft, Transneft and Rosneft - will be targeted, alongside a few banks and defense manufacturing companies.

Earlier, EU Council President Herman van Rompuy had made clear the bloc might refrain from adopting a new package if the Donbass ceasefire is observed.

In Rompuy's words such a decision is tied to "permanent" truce and to the start of new negotiations seeking solutions of the conflict, since the current ceasefire is just a single step.
