A Russia-NATO nuclear conflict is possible if Europe provides military assistance to Ukraine, legendary Polish politician and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Lech Walesa believes.

"This is why it isn't getting involved too much," Walesa said when asked whether weapons should be sent to Ukraine to help it in its fight against pro-Russian rebels, he told reporters at a regional economic forum in Krynica, southern Poland.

"The EU is well aware that Russia has nuclear weapons. NATO has them too. Must we then destroy each other?," Walesa believes.

The one-time iconic trade-union leader and President (1990-1995) of Poland made his comments with regard to a decision of EU leaders to impose further sanctions on Moscow if it does not take urgent measures to wind down tensions in Ukraine within 7 days, starting last Saturday.
