Bulgaria OKs Disaster Risk Management Peer Reviews by EU Countries

Bulgaria's caretaker government has decided to allow experts from the European Commission to examine its capacity to manage disaster risks.

The peer reviews may be conducted on the basis of a decision of the EU concerning the Union's Civil Protection Mechanism, which envisages the creation of a common framework for disaster risk prevention.

The aim of the inspections is to create an integrated approach to disaster management, according to econ.bg.

The cooperation takes place on an entirely voluntary basis, on the request of Member States, and is implemented through external assessment and training.

The recommendations issued by the experts are not binding and the funding for the procedure is provided by the EC.

In 2012 and 2013, pilot peer reviews of disaster risk management policies were conducted in the UK and Finland.
