British film actor and director Richard Attenborough has died at the age of 90, the BBC has reported.

In his career of six decades Lord Attenborough appeared in films like “Brighton Rock”, “The Great Escape”, “Doctor Dolittle” and blockbuster “Jurassic Park” and as a director he won two Oscars for “Gandhi.”

Lord Attenborough, who had been in a nursing home for a number of years, died on Sunday.

Steven Spielberg, who directed 1993’s “Jurassic Park”, said Lord Attenborough “was the perfect ringmaster to bring the dinosaurs back to life as John Hammond in “Jurassic Park”.

British Prime Minister David Cameron said: “Richard Attenborough was one of the greats of cinema."

The BBC also quoted Chris Hewitt from Empire Magazine News as saying that Lord Attenborough had had a "huge impact" on cinema.

Lord Attenborough, one of Britain's best known actors, made his professional stage debut at the age of 18 after having started acting aged just 12.
