British intelligence services have identified the Islamic State (IS) fighter suspected of having beheaded US journalist James Foley, government sources say.

"Senior" officials quoted by the Sunday Times say the identity of the man with a London accent known to fellow insurgents as "Jihadi John" was already known to MI5 and MI6.

Though authorities reportedly provided no details, the Times argues Abdel-Majed Abdel Bary is "a key s suspect".

UK officials have not yet provided official comments.

Earlier this week a video was published online containing footage of a statement by captive US reporter James Foley which purported to be showing his beheading. FBI confirmed the video was authentic.

Foley was among a number of Westerners still known to be in hands of Sunni extremist group IS.
