Caretaker Culture Minister Martin Ivanov said on Sunday that Bulgaria's authorities abdicated culture decades ago.

In an interview with private TV channel NOVA he called for a "campaign" that should more actively promote Bulgarian culture.

He made clear that problems in Bulgaria's cultural sector could not be solved in the two-month term of the interim government.

"The problem with Bulgaria's culture is not in its quality. Our actors, painters, librarians are wonderful. The problem is that for years, even for decades, the state has abdicated Bulgarian culture," Ivanov explained.

He urged Bulgarians to be more actively involved in reinstating culture where it deserves to be.

"We are all very proud that we have a thirteen-century-long history, but would each one of us give BGN 13 for historic sites? The fact that we have no money at the moment is not a problem. What is rather of concern is that were are not going to have it in the future either. Unless we realize it, we will be witnessing how our values and our brightest minds are dissolving".

Ivanov added that, even though "we like to say we are a small people... we are uneasy about showing to the world what he have. And we have is a lot".
