60% of Babies Born in Bulgaria in 2013 Were Out-of-Wedlock-Births

Nearly 60% of the babies born in Bulgaria in 2013, or a total of 39 375, were born out of wedlock, according to the National Statistical Institute (NSI).

In 70% of the cases, information about the father was available, according to NSI data, as cited by Darik radio.

In 2013, the number of marriages stood at around 20 000, compared to a number of 82 826 marriages in 1945.

The share of couples living together without marriage doubled in the period 2001-2011, reaching a level of 8% of the population.

70% of the so-called domestic partnerships are people aged 16-39, 16% are people aged 40-49, and 14% are people aged 50+.

Although the birth of the first child is believed to be a major reason for domestic partnerships to result in a marriage, 61.8% of the respondents of a survey say that the decision to marry is not dependent on having a baby.

The average marriage age has increased from 28 to 30 for men over the past 2-3 years.

The average marriage age for women increased from 27 years to 27 years and 3 months in the period 2012-2013.
