GERB Leader Warns of Caretaker Govt Scenario after Early Elections

Boyko Borisov, leader of center-right party GERB, has said he is firmly opposed to a coalition with the right-wingers from The Reformist Bloc.

In a Thursday interview for the morning broadcast of the Bulgarian National Television (BNT), he emphasized that if GERB (Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria) failed to win 121 seats in the new Parliament, thereby securing a majority, they would return the mandate to form a government and leave The Reformist Bloc to try to talk Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) into forming a ruling coalition.

He claimed that GERB was the only formation which could secure the fragile stability after the early elections on October 5.

Borisov cautioned that a scenario involving a caretaker government after the early elections would push Bulgaria into a spiral of instability which would leave people "with nothing to eat, not to mention building motorways and bridges."

The leader of GERB insisted that The Reformist Bloc had a choice between starting to act like a normal party and listening to the commands of "their chief", Ivan Kostov, former leader of the Democrats for Strong Bulgaria (DSB).

Borisov emphasized that he would not engage in backstage politics.
