Hollywood's Golden Age Actress Lauren Bacall Dies at 89

Iconic film and stage star Lauren Bacall has passed away at the age of 89.

One of the leading ladies of Hollywood’s Golden Age, Bacall died after a stroke at her home in New York, Tuesday.

She was famous for starring — on screen and off — with Humphrey Bogart in such 1940s classics as The Big Sleep, To Have and Have Not, Dark Passage and Key Largo. In one of Hollywood’s great love stories, they married in 1945 and stayed together until his death in 1957. Four years later she married another acting legend, Jason Robards Jr.; they divorced in 1969.

A Twitter account of Humphrey Bogart’s estate, run by their son Stephen Bogart, posted a message confirming the news, the BBC reports. "With deep sorrow, yet with great gratitude for her amazing life, we confirm the passing of Lauren Bacall," the message read.

Bacall appeared in more than 30 movies, and acted on stage in New York, winning Tony Awards for best leading actress in a musical in 1970 for Applause and in 1981 for Woman of the Year.

A second wave of film acting earned her an Academy Award nomination in 1996 for her role opposite Barbra Streisand in The Mirror Has Two Faces.

In 2009, Bacall was selected by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to receive an Academy Honorary Award "in recognition of her central place in the Golden Age of motion pictures."
