The town of Mizia, where low-lying parts are still under water after last week's flash flood, is already facing scarcity of drinking water, authorities warn.

Drainage is being carried out for a seventh consecutive day in the town, and special pumps are used to take away water and mire, as Mizia's own drainage system is clogged with mud, alongside streets, yards and houses.

Food supplies mostly consist of canned food, but military mobile kitchens are also used to prepare dishes.

Locals are also struggling with the lack of shovels, wheelbarrows, rubber boots and gloves, but with an insufficient number of volunteers to clean up the damages.

The Bulgarian Red Cross has urged people from across the country to come to Mizia well-equipped and and to contact the newly established Volunteer Center in the town, which is in charge of coordinating their work.

The nearby village of Krushovitsa, where 150 houses were inundated by the Skat river, is meanwhile experiencing food shortage.

"I call on donors to send those affected... canned food, this is what people in the village mostly need," Focus News Agency quoted Krushovitsa Mayor Iliya Ilievski as saying.
