Lack of Quorum Foils Bulgarian Parliament's Last Regular Session

Lawmakers failed to reach quorum on Friday, when they were to hold their last regular meeting before President Rosen Plevneliev dissolves Parliament on August 6.

Amendments to the Waste Management Act and the Protection of Competition Act were on the MPs' agenda after Plevneliev vetoed changes to the latter text.

Parliament Speaker Mihail Mikov, however, reminded another session was yet to be held in the National Assembly.

An emergency vote on amendments to the State Budget of the Republic of Bulgaria Act has been scheduled after members of Parliament approved the update proposed by the Council of Ministers during its last meeting.

Opposition GERB later threatened to block the overhaul after ruling Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) accused them of seeking to forge an alliance with the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS), socialists' coalition partners in the outgoing cabinet.

Plevneliev has called on lawmakers to back the motion.

He is due to hold consultations with political parties on Friday in which budget amendments are to be the single issue on the agenda.
