The website of the European Central Bank (ECB) has been hacked, resulting in the theft of email addresses and other contact data.

Hackers have stolen e-mail addresses of thousands of website visitors and contacts of journalists and participants of ECB’s events, the bank’s officials said Thursday, adding that the police have started investigating the case.

“The theft came to light after an anonymous email was sent to the ECB seeking financial compensation for the data," a statement on the ECB website read.

The Central Bank said that no market sensitive data or internal banking systems were compromised, the BBC reports.

The information was stolen from a database serving the bank's website that was physically separate from the bank's internal systems, the ECB added.

The bank has contacted all people whose email addresses or other data may have been compromised.
