Michael Schumacher is able to communicate with his family by moving his eyelids, and could return home by the end of the month, according to reports.

The Formula One driver has been recovering in a Swiss rehabilitation clinic in Lausanne since June. He has reportedly made progress with his recovery since his transfer there from a hospital in Grenoble, France, to which he was initially taken after his skiing accident on December 29.

"There are signs that Michael will leave the clinic soon and be cared for at home," reported Swiss newspaper SonntagsBlick on Monday.

Schumacher's wife Corinna is believed to have transformed part of their Swiss home into a medical centre, including advanced medical equipment and space for full-time, live-in carers.

Meanwhile, the Mirror has reported that Schumacher is able to answer questions from his wife and children by fluttering his eyelashes.

According to DigitalSpy, Schumacher's colleagues from Formula 1 Lewis Hamilton, Jenson Button and Niki Lauda have written letters of support to him.

Hamilton offered his support to Schumacher in a handwritten letter, saying: "Dear Michael. You are always in my prayers. Prayers of hope that you pull through this difficult time. You have already achieved so much, given so much." He added: "May God watch over you and show you the way back to your family, fans and friends."

Button also wrote a letter to say: "When I think of Michael Schumacher I think of two things.
"The first is of one my earliest memories of being in Formula 1 driving out of the pitlane in Melbourne and seeing Michael's red Ferrari ahead of me scattering the leaves as he drove beneath the trees at the approach to turn three. Even in 2000 he was already a legend.

"The second thing I think about is that familiar red car snaking about in my mirrors. Michael was such a formidable racer relentlessly competitive - Always There.
"He's fighting his greatest battle right now and I know everyone at Formula 1 will hope that he will win again. I certainly hope he will."

F1 legend Lauda added: "Michael, every day I follow the news on your progress and every day I am close to you. I hope I will be able to talk to you very, very soon."

Schumacher's wife Corinna also wrote a letter of gratitude in the official programme for last weekend's race, saying: "The German Grand Prix gives me the perfect opportunity to cordially thank you for all your good wishes and positive energies you keep sending Michael.
