Bulgarian MPs Not to Renew Work, Await Gov't Resignation

Lawmakers in Bulgarian Parliament failed to agree on whether any session should be held until the cabinet of Prime Minister Plamen Oresharski resigns.

The government is expected to step down later this week, with previous reports suggesting it will submit a resignation on Sunday.

Ruling Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) Chairman Atanas Merdzhanov, however, told reporters in Parliament was expected "any time".

Neither Oresharski nor members of his cabinet have made public any plans to announce the move at the last meeting of the Council of Ministers (scheduled Wednesday) or later during the day.

Despite agreement reached earlier that MPs will continue their work until Parliament is dissolved on August 6 by President Rosen Plevneliev, two parties, center-right opposition GERB and far-right Ataka, have continued to boycott the plenary hall.

As a result, Bulgaria's lawmakers have failed to reach quorum in their last attempts to gather for an ordinary session.

Socialist members said the resignation could become reality by Friday at the latest, but added the final decision was in the Prime Minister's hands.

Bulgaria is heading for early elections on October 5 and its Parliament is to be dissolved on August 6, after weak results of the BSP caused a rift with its junior coalition partners from the liberal Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS), which announced the government would not have its full term in office.
