Northern Bulgaria Boasts Annual Raspberry Production of 8000 Tonnes

The production of raspberries in northern Bulgaria is regaining momentum and is about to become a principle means of subsistence in the region.

The annual production of raspberries amounts to 8000 tonnes and 80% of it is exported to the Netherlands, Germany and the UK, according to Standard daily.

The highest rates of raspberry production have been registered in the municipalities of Popovo, Loznitsa, and on the territory of Lovech, Apriltsi and Troyan.

The local population in these areas is reportedly hoping that raspberry production will become a principle means of subsistence in the region which will bring back their relatives who are working abroad.

A total of 500 raspberry pickers are currently working in the municipality of Loznitsa, earning some BGN 30-40 a day.

According to Bozhidar Petkov, Executive Director of the Association of Raspberry Producers in Bulgaria, there were no raspberry bushes in the region 10 years ago, while now raspberry plants span an area of over 1500 decares.

According to the Mayor of Loznitsa, Ayhan Hashamov, the production of raspberries is yet to develop in the region.

The segment currently offers hundreds of seasonal jobs and 40 permanent jobs.
