State of emergency is to remain in the municipalities of Primorsko, Sozopol and Tsarevo, located along the southern Black Sea coast, Bulgarian authorities say.

The situation is however easing down after Tuesday and Wednesday's torrential rains caused the Dyavolska and Ropotamo rivers to swell.

Officials have announced that emergency could be lifted in both Primorsko and the northeastern municipality of Byala.

The road between Sozopol and Primorsko, which was flooded as a result of heavy downpours, is now open to traffic.

In the town of Primorsko, also a popular tourist resort, the overflown Dyavolska seriously damaged the beach and inundated the airport, which looked like a "lake" for hours, website Dariknews.bg quotes witnesses as saying.

Tourists were evacuated from tens of hotels as their ground floors were mostly under water.

In Sozopol, damages are mainly on the infrastructure, but beaches are also affected, with one of them risking to become repulsive for tourists as a tidal waters which could not flow into the pumping-shafts formed a river producing a strong and unpleasant smell which runs on the sand and disgorges itself into the sea.
