Damages after Saturday's incident when a passenger train went of the tracks in Eastern Bulgaria could exceed BGN 2 M, Transport Minister Danail Papazov announced.

Papazov told public broadcaster BNR that the entire rolling stock of the train was damaged in the incident.

Elaborating on the costs, which approximately equal EUR 1 M, he added the engine could not be repaired, and the railroad will also require money to be fixed, with initial estimates putting the sum for the latter activity at EUR 135 000.

Over the weekend, a train from the capital Sofia to the Black Sea city of Varna derailed at the Kaloyanovets station near the eastern city of Stara Zagora.

The engine and four carriages left the rails, leaving the motorman dead and twelve people injured.

Papazov reiterated that the most likely reason for the derailment was excessive speed.
