Clashes Break Out In Argentina After World Cup Defeat

Disorders erupted in the Argentinian capital of Buenos Aires late Sunday after the country’s national team lost 0-1 to Germany in the final match of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

The clashes occurred near the Obelisk in city center of Buenos Aires, where thousands of people peacefully gathered earlier to cheer for their team. Groups of aggressive football fans, disappointed by the defeat of their national squad, started shattering windows of shops and restaurants, hurling rocks at vehicles and setting garbage up on fire, Itar-Tass reports.

Police used tear gas and water cannons to disperse angry fans. At least 20 officers were injured and 60 people were arrested, according to international media reports.

Elsewhere in the Argentine capital, angry fans set fire to trash cans and blocked roads with makeshift barricades. Violence was also reported in San Miguel, a northwest region of Greater Buenos Aires, and in the city of La Plata where police detained at least 10 people.

Meanwhile, Lionel Messi, the captain of the Argentinian football squad, was named the best player of the 2014 World Cup and was awarded the Golden Ball trophy, Sunday.
