Medical Association: Bulgaria's Health System Falling Apart

The health system in Bulgaria is falling apart and the government is acting irresponsibly, said the Sofia organisation of the Bulgarian Medical Association in a press statement. 

“In the final days of its failed rule, the Government again demonstrates total lack of responsibility,” said the Association. 

According to the organisation, the analysis of the National Health Insurance Fund (NZOK) and the BMA shows that the NZOK budget will have a BGN 400-500 M deficit, which will force it to decrease payments to hospitals by 30-40%. This would lead many hospitals to bankruptcy, while others will accumulate huge debts. 

“Currently the debts of the state-owned hospitals surpass BGN 500 M and the Finance Minister Petar Chobanov cynically said an update of the NZOK budget was not necessary,” says the statement of the Sofia organisation of the BMA.

The Association reminded that the Stara Zagora hospital was in practical bankruptcy, the Haskovo hospital would follow suit, the large state-owned hospitals could have their assets frozen by suppliers and the emergency aid was falling apart.

“At the same time the Government spends like there is no tomorrow, and the politicians in Parliament bicker like an old married couple,” said the statement.
