Bulgarian Interior Minister Refers Predecessor to Prosecutor's Office

Bulgarian Interior Minister Tsvetlin Yovchev has submitted a tip-off to the prosecuting authority against his predecessor Tsvetan Tsvetanov.

The information was confirmed by the Interior Ministry, according to reports of the Bulgarian National Radio.

Yovchev asked the prosecuting authority whether former Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov, currently Deputy Chair of center-right party GERB (Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria), committed a crime through his public statements.

In February 2014, Delyan Peevski, a controversial MP from liberal party Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS), cited excerpts from Interior Ministry records indicating that he had been at the Interior Ministry building 40 times in the period 2009-2013 during Tsvetanov's term in office. Tsvetanov, however, insisted that he had had no more than 7 meetings with him during that period.

Tsvetanov argued that the inquiry of the Interior Ministry about the number of his meetings with Delyan Peevski had been forged as a result of tampering with the official records.

In an interview for bTV in end-May, Tsvetanov suggested that around 60% of the data provided in the inquiry was false and that he could not possibly have attended such meetings with Peevski during his term in office as Interior Minister.
