Former Environment Minister Iskra Mihaylova has become the nomination of the European Parliament's ALDE group to chair the Regional Development Committee.

Mihaylova handed back the environment portfolio after May 25's European Parliament elections to have a MEP seat after her colleague from the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS) Delyan Peevski, who was second in his party's list, announced he would not go to Brussels and proposed that she do instead.

Representatives of other major political parties in the European Parliament, EP election winner GERB and ruling BSP, are unlikely to be offered such a significant role in the European Parliament, a correspondent for the Bulgarian National Radio reports.

The reason is that both the four socialists and six opposition conservative MEPs belong to larger groups (S&D and EPP, respectively) and constitute a relatively small share of them.

So far no other important committee portfolios are in sight for Bulgaria's new representatives in the European Parliament.
