Some 50% of food in Bulgaria is produced in the grey market, and almost all fish sold on the local markets is illegal.

Those were among the claims of the representatives of inter-branch organizations discussed at a meeting concerning food control, Bulgaria's National Radio informs.

The legally produced fish and fish products are not welcome on the local market, said Yordan Gospodinov. According to him, there are 3,600 production sites for fish in Bulgaria and only 700 of them have been registered.

The food control is weak and only the legitimate producers are subject to it, the owner of a fruit processing plant argued.

The inter-branch organizations were unanimous that there are control mechanisms that are used only for racketeering of food producers, BNR reports.

“We produce high quality foods from natural raw materials made in Bulgaria”, a bread producer claimed.
