Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff was confirmed on Saturday as candidate for re-election to a second term of the governing Workers Party.

The elections are to take place on October 5, with a possible run-off on October 26, according to reports of the BBC News.

Rousseff, the daughter of a Bulgarian immigrant and Brazil’s first woman president, won the 2010 presidential elections in a run-off, succeeding her ally and mentor, former two-term President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

According to a poll of the Brazilian Institute of Public Opinion, Rousseff enjoys the support of 39% of the voters, compared to a rate of 21% for her main rival, Social Democratic candidate Aecio Neves.

Addressing some 800 party delegates at a convention in Brasilia on Saturday, she vowed to boost social policies.

In her statement, Rousseff defended public spending on the ongoing football World Cup tournament, saying that the investments in infrastructure built for the event had been a necessity for the development of the country.
