Parliament Committee Starts Probe into President Plevneliev

Bulgarian Parliament Committee investigating into President Rosen Plevneliev's contacts with representatives of EDCs is to meet for the first time Thursday.

The temporary inquiry committee was established on May 8 upon a motion by the far-right Ataka and drew support from the ruling Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP).

Its official aim is to look into "the activities of the EDCs and the concessionaires and their unauthorized contacts with politicians".

But Ataka has made no secret its targets include President Plevneliev, who paid an official visit to Vienna in March, amid a scandal between the Bulgarian government (and the state energy watchdog DKEVR) and the electricity distribution companies (EDCs) over two-way debt allegations.

Plevneliev held a conversation back then with EVN Bulgaria Chairman Stefan Siskovic.

Party representatives however argue the Committee's top priority is to investigate into the "monopoly" of the EDCs.

Plevneliev has said he will not appear before the Committee as he deems its activities illegitimate.

The opposition party GERB, which raised Plevneliev's bid for the presidency back in 2011, has described Ataka's actions as a mere instrument to tarnish his reputation.
