Bulgaria’s Top Football League to be Reduced to 10 Teams

Bulgaria's top football division could remain with only 10 teams, following Tuesday's decision of the Bulgarian Football Union (BFU).

After the BFU meeting, it was revealed that newly promoted Marek (Dupnitsa) and Haskovo will not receive licenses to play in the top division. No reasons were pointed out, although it most likely concerns lack of finances in the clubs, as well as unauthorized stadiums.

Both Marek and Haskovo have 1 week to appeal the decision, before the BFU makes its final verdict.

Last year, the league was reduced from 16 to 14 teams, under a new format which included play-offs. The 2014-2015 season was set to be with 12 teams, but even this figure seems unlikely at this point.

The league will begin on July 19. If it is with 10 teams, they will all play each other 4 times. If Marek and Haskovo win their appeals, there will be a regular season, as well as play-off rounds between the top 6 and the bottom 6.
