Estonia to Propose ex-PM Andrus Ansip as EU Commissioner

Andrus Ansip, Estonia's former and longest-serving Prime Minister (2005-2014), will be the country's nominee for the office of EU Commissioner.

The decision was officially announced on Thursday by incumbent PM Taavi Roivas, as the Baltic Business News reports.

Ansip, 57, resigned on March 26 this year, amid sinking popularity of his center-right party. He nevertheless announced back then he would seek a job in the EU Commission, hinting he might replace incumbent Transport Commissioner Siim Kalas after the next Commission is appointed later this year.

He has said he would like to be in charge of monetary affairs, energy issues of regional policies. Development assistance and neighborhood policies, however, are portfolios he also considers to be of interest.

As Prime Minister Andrus Ansip put through a series of austerity measures which helped Estonia to emerge out of the severe recession it underwent in 2008-2009.
